How to Know Good and Bad Carbohydrates

Basically the carbs to avoid are those found in processed foodstuffs. Try to avoid fast food such as pizzas, burgers and instead opt for healthy options. Home-cooking is good as you can control what you put into a dish. Use olive oil with good fatty acids and carbs, and avoid processed vegetable oils such as canola, safflower and soy which have been refined so much that there is little natural goodness left in them.

As a rule of thumb, don't eat anything out of a can, as it will contain some form of sugar. Breakfast cereals are out as they have been subject to various processes to give then taste appeal which are sure to increase rather than decrease your weight.

Good carbohydrates are found in natural produce especially in leafy greens such as collards, mustard greens and the superfoods class of fruit and vegetables. These so-called superfoods include broccoli, kiwi fruit, nuts (not salted) and a whole variety of others.

Fish and seafood contain good carbs too and the oily fish are especially beneficial for your health as they contain high amounts of Omega-3 fatty acids which are sadly lacking in the diets of most Westerners.

All types of potatoes are not advisable as they contain a lot of starch, so avoid yams and sweet potatoes as well as the ordinary variety. You can eat limited amounts of whole grain pasta, and breads, so have these as potato substitutes. However avoid refined white flour and the products made from it which include cakes, white bread and cookies.

If you do buy processed foods read the label and the contents and don't buy cans with added sugars such as pectin and glucose. Try to avoid popsicles, packaged fruit juices and soft drinks - even low or no calorie ones. Low calories do not mean low carbs necessarily.

You need cellulose or dietary fiber in your diet, although this is one of the carbohydrate containing foodstuffs and this is found in fresh vegetables. You need fiber in your diet to keep your digestion system functioning smoothly. Without fiber you will be prone to constipation and this will not assist weight loss. It can also be the cause of piles.

You should do some research on the Internet about the foods you can eat on a low-carbohydrate diet, and find out for yourself the difference between good carbs and the carbs to avoid.
