Set Weight Loss Goals You Can Realistically Achieve

It usually takes a lot of time and effort to permanently lose weight, and you probably don't have much hope of being able to do so if you don't set any goals and then work to meet them. Different kinds of goals work for different people. Some people set specific weight goals, such as trying to lose 25 pounds over the summer. Others set strict exercise goals, such as working out a certain number of hours in a week.

Whatever goals you may have set for yourself, you might need to step back and analyze how helpful those goals really are in your weight loss attempt. Sometimes setting goals actually hinders your weight loss attempts if you set goals that are too big, too demanding, or simply unrealistic. If you set the wrong kind of goals, you will likely throw in the towel before too long.

The emotional demands of trying to lose weight can be enormous, and you should set goals that make it easier rather than harder. You can think of goals that are realistic for you and ways that you can reward yourself when you achieve them. It may sound like a mind game that you play with yourself, and to some degree it is.

Keeping your goals small and simple makes it much more likely that you are going to be able to stick to them and shed the pounds. If you set a goal to lose 75 pounds, for example, the task can seem impossibly difficult. Even when you lose 15, you may forget to congratulate yourself because of all that you still have to lose.

A better method might be to set a goal to lose that first 15. Think of a satisfying reward that you can give yourself when you lose those pounds, like a new book or tickets to a big game. When you lose the first pounds, you can sincerely congratulate yourself and revel in the reward. Then you can set a new small goal and move on.

Breaking your weight loss goals into small parts can help you to stay motivated. You won't get overwhelmed by the entire huge task if you are just working toward your latest small goal. This allows you to have a good attitude and to be genuinely pleased with each accomplishment along the way.

An example of a small goal is to try to get 40 minutes of exercise every day for a week. Another small goal might be to eat some fresh fruit every day for two weeks. You might set a goal to eat a little less saturated fat every week for a month.

Whatever the small goal, try to set just one at a time and don't forget to reward yourself. Congratulate yourself for every small goal you achieve!
