Weight Loss After Menopause - How to Lose Weight and Avoid Gaining It Back

Menopause, also known as "the change of life" is something all women must go through. There are a lot of changes we experience during menopause. Getting through the change is a matter of adapting to the new things going on in our body. While menopause can cause a host of symptoms, a lot of women are most concerned with the ability to lose weight after menopause.

Weight gain during and after menopause can happen due to a variety of things. Hormonal changes can affect our weight as well as having less muscle mass. As we age our muscle mass naturally lessens, this causes us to burn calories slower. Even worse, is that a lot of the weight shifts to the belly instead of arms, hips, and thighs. Not only is this unattractive, but can be quite dangerous. Increased weight, especially belly fat, can cause high blood pressure, increased risks of heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers.

Weight loss after menopause can be done. Create a plan to help you. Knowing that our body burns calories slower now you should adjust the amount you eat and what you eat. Be sure you are making healthy choices, lots of vegetables, fruit, and lean proteins. Start an exercise plan, it could include things like brisk walking, swimming, or going to the gym. Try and implement a little weight lifting in your plan to help increase muscle mass.

Another factor that can make it hard to lose weight after menopause is your emotional health. When we experience things like a child leaving home, divorce, retirement, or even a move, it can be challenging to handle it emotionally. During times like these it is so important to have friends and family. Often, it is a great idea to enlist a family member or friend to become an exercise buddy. Not only is the activity good for you, but you get to enjoy being around someone you love as well. An additional bonus is that exercise is a great stress reliever.

So to lose weight after menopause and avoid gaining it back, start your plan immediately. Here is your checklist. Have fun and enjoy these years, we earned this special time in our lives and need to stay healthy so that it can be the best time of our life!
