5 Common Mistakes When Dieting

1) Drinking Sodas

This is the number one mistake for a reason. Drinking a two liter bottle of soda, or even three twenty ounce bottles of soda, in a day is extremely bad for your diet. Whether you're counting calories, carbohydrates, or whatever there's no denying that these drinks are awful. But don't take my word for it. Here's a direct quote:

Ravi Dhingra, MD, a Harvard Medical School researcher, did a study of 6,000 middle-aged men and women who had exams every four years. At the beginning of the study, all were free of heart disease and metabolic syndrome. Four years later, in comparison to people who drank less than one soda per day, research found that those who consumed one or more sodas a day experienced: A 25% increased risk of impaired or higher than normal glucose and high triglyceride levels. A 31% greater likelihood of becoming obese. A 32% higher chance of lower HDL levels. A 44% increased risk of metabolic syndrome.

These results were published in the July 31, 2007, issue of Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association. So stay away from these drinks. They are just awful for you and your diet.

2) Portions too large

Portion Control isn't a hard concept to understand. However it's one of the top three mistakes made when dieting. The concept is simple. The body only needs certain amounts of each food class per meal to maintain a healthy diet. The problem is most of us load up our plates with meat and potatoes and breads then fruits and vegetables. Instead the order should be mostly vegetables, with some fruit, a small amount of meat, and an even smaller amount of whole grains.

3) Snacking too late

Sneaking snacks after your dinner is one of the biggest mistakes people can make. After dinner, which is typically eaten eight to nine hours after breakfast, the body's metabolism begins to slow down for the night. So in the simplest form the body retains everything that you eat after dinner. With that being said try not to snack if you've been awake for more than ten hours or else you run the risk of losing a day's worth of dieting.

4) Not Getting All 3 Meals

You wake up late for work so you rush out without breakfast. You are swamped at work so you maybe skip lunch. Or the day was long a grueling and instead of dinner you go straight to bed. It happens. We know this People's lives are complex and some days are more complex than others. But skipping meals hurts your metabolism. When you wake up your body needs instant intake to get the metabolism all fired up for the day. If you skip lunch your metabolism will slow down to crawl and you will retain most of your dinner. Not eating the three meals also leads to people making mistake two and three. You missed lunch so you grab larger portions at dinner or you still eat the right portions but by nighttime you feel like you're starving so you snack... and snack. There's a million reasons why you don't want to skip a meal so make sure to get all three. Your diet is an investment in yourself and your health. So make time for you.

5) Buying the wrong foods

This is another major mistake. You're in the grocery store and you see all the good looking foods right there in front of you... so you get them. Tsk tsk tsk. I've done it myself for years. But that's part of what made me put on so much weight. Now I always check the nutritional labels before I buy food. I won't say look at one thing over another as they are all important and it all depends on what your doctor and particular diet suggests. But regardless of what diet you're on you will want to check this too see what nutrients and what amounts of those nutrients you're going to intake per serving: On a nutritional label the things listed normally are the serving size, the calories, the fat, the sodium, the carbs, the fiber, the sugar, the protein, and also the vitamins and minerals. All these things play important roles in every diet. If you have high blood pressure you want to check the label for the foods sodium amounts. If you have blood sugar problems you would want to check for the amounts of sugar listed per serving. But it all boils down to the same thing. Check the nutritional labels! Know what you're eating.
