The Fish Oil Diet Can Help You Lose Weight In As Little As 4 Weeks

By now everyone has heard the wonders of fish oil for your heart, but did you know it can help you lose weight too?

Researchers at the University of Minnesota have discovered that the type of fat in your blood stream reflects your diet. In other words, a high fat diet raises your "bad fats" while a low fat diet raises the level of your "good fats".

While these good fats can work wonders on reducing your cholesterol and blood pressure, it's only recently that their benefits on weight loss are being discovered.

Fish and Your Weight

Many diets include eating fish as part of them. Whether you call it the Mediterranean diet or a low fat diet or give it some other structure, fish is a lean protein. Countries like Japan and Norway with fish based diet tend to be thinner.

Yet, it's not just the lean protein.

Researchers now think part of the reason is the fats in the fish oil. These essential fatty acids are the EPA and DHA. Your body can't make them and must take them from your food. Experts believe these fatty acids increase your blood flow throughout your body and speed up your metabolism.

In that way, the "fish oil diet" can help you lose weight.

In a study at the University of Western Australia, participants were divided into 4 groups. One group ate fish each day, one group cut their calorie intake, group 3 cut calories and ate fish once a day and the fourth group was the control.

Each group had their blood pressure, glucose, fatty acids and cholesterol levels monitored. At the end of the trial, the group who had cut calories and eaten fish every day had lost weight and raised their levels of "good cholesterol".

How You Can Follow a Fish Diet

You don't have to eat fish at every meal to benefit. You can simply add more fish to your diet. By cutting down on calorie laden foods and eating fish 2 to 3 times a week, you'll raise your levels of "good fats" and help speed up your metabolism.

One study found that participants who added fish oil supplements to their daily diet lost 5 pounds over a 6-week period. In this study, the participants didn't even change their diet or lifestyle. The addition of the omega 3 fatty acids seemed to contribute to their weight loss.

If you'd like to lose weight with the fish oil diet, you will want to include supplements with high levels of EPA and DHA so you get the maximum benefit.
