The Negative Effects Of Starving To Lose Weight

People who want to know how to lose weight fast often resort to starvation as a method for losing their extra pounds. However, severely cutting down on calories can actually slow down the weight loss process. This is because the body will go into starvation mode and begin to store fat in the body.

The body adjusts its metabolic rate according to the availability of food and nutrition. When you begin to starve, the body thinks that food supply is scarce and decides to make more efficient use of its resources. It stops burning fat and begins to store them for future use in case of further food shortage. Then it turns to lean tissue or muscles in the body and starts to burn them up as fuel to keep the body functioning.

This defense mechanism works perfectly when you are in a real famine situation and your body needs to survive on very little food. But when you use the same strategies for weight loss, it would backfire very badly.

Moreover, when the body begins to lose muscle content, the metabolic rate would also begin to decrease. This would further reduce the burn up of fat in the body. So starvation is not a good strategy to lose weight.

Instead, you need to maintain a certain amount of calorie intake to prevent your body from going into starvation mode. Most nutrition experts believe that maintaining a minimum of 1000 to 1200 calories a day is an absolute must to prevent starvation.

You also need to have a good metabolic rate in order to burn up calories. Your body's metabolic rate is partly based on the amount of muscle mass in your body. When you have more muscles, your metabolic rate would generally be higher. When you lose muscles, your metabolic rate will go down. This is one reason you need to exercise and build muscles so that your body's metabolic rate remains high and you burn more calories.

Strength or resistance training is good for increasing the volume of muscles in the body. Every extra pound of muscle can burn up 50 calories a day. So if you can add 10lbs of muscles to your body, you can burn up an additional 500 calories a day without doing anything to your diet. At this rate, your body will lose 1lb of excess weight every single week.

So instead of starving your body and failing to lose weight, build up more muscle mass and lose fat more efficiently.
