What Do You Do To Lose Weight - 7 Myths That Make You Gain Weight

There are seven myths that many of us believe that confuse our efforts to lose weight! These beliefs are obstacles to success. Lets take a short look at these seven myths.

1) The Starvation Myth: The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies a diet containing less than 2,100 calories a day for the average man and 1,800 calories for the average women as a starvation diet.

What I can tell you about this myth is that the human body, the miracle that it is, will defend itself against what it thinks is starvation. Your metabolism will slow to a crawl and then you have created what many call the yo-yo diet.

2) The Calorie Myth: This myth is that all calories are created equal. This couldn't be further from the truth.

When calories are burned in a laboratory, they are all created equal and release the same amount of energy. There is no difference between a thousand calories of potatoes and a thousand calories of a low-fat yogurt - until they are metabolized!

Your body's metabolism looks at calories differently and absorbs them at different rates. For example, the sugar from a soda enters your blood stream very rapidly, while the same amount of sugar from low-fat yogurt enters the blood slowly. When a sugar enters your body so quickly there is more of the chance that these calories will not be burned, therefore, they will be stored as fat. Food that enters your bloodstream quickly promotes weight gain, food that enters slowly promotes weight loss! Therefore counting calories can be tricky.

3) Eating Fat Makes You Fat: We all have been brainwashed into believing that if we eat fat we will get fat. The American paradox is that we are eating less fat than we ever have, but we are growing fatter. One of the main reasons this is the case is that low-fat diets are often rich in starchy or sugary carbohydrates. These carbohydrates help temporarily replace the feelings of hunger that are left by a lack of fat in the diet. These types of carbohydrates will raise your insulin levels and this promotes weight gain. It is necessary to eat some fat.

4) The Carb Myth: Eating low carb or no carb will make you thin. Carbohydrates are one of the three major energy sources. The other two major sources are fats and protein. The main sources in our current diets for these two energy sources are meat,eggs,poultry,dairy,fish,beans,seeds, and nuts. Carbohydrates are essentially everything else and they are by far the biggest group of foods we eat.

What happens here is that people fail to understand that there are good carbs and bad carbs. If you have many of the bad carbs you are still going to gain weight.

5) The Sumo Wrestler Myth: Skipping meals helps you lose weight. This to me is just one of the worst things you can do for a diet. When you skip meals you are bringing your metabolism down to a crawl because your body now thinks you are starving. You need to keep your metabolism sped up in order to burn calories.

6) The French Paradox Myth: The french are thin because they drink wine and eat butter. There are some important distinguishing characteristics between the French and American diets. The real story of why the French are thinner is as follows. The French eat more of the real foods, they eat less food, they walk more than we do and they eat food slower than we do.

7) The Protector Myth: Government Policies and Food Industry Regulations Protect our Health. The food industry in the U.S. spends more than $33 billion a year on marketing alone. The U.S. Department of Agriculture spends only $300 million on nutrition education. What is wrong with this picture?

A final thought for you. What do you do to lose weight? What I will say with this is that it pays to educate yourself on the many types of weight loss plans. Also with there being so many body makeups there is no way everyone's diet will be the same.
