20 Ways To End Over Eating

Overeating is the bane of many dieter's existence: A cloud constantly standing over their shoulders, watching, and waiting. With some simple tips, though, you can conquer your demons and stop the overeating bug before it even happens.

· Exercise regularly. Exercising not only burns calories, but it keeps cortisol levels down. Cortisol is a hormone that makes you feel hungry even when you shouldn't be.

· Get plenty of sleep. This has the same effect as the above point: you want to keep cortisol and stress levels as far down as you can.

· Drink plenty of water. This will keep you alert, and your stomach feeling full.

· Get at least one hour of relaxation time daily. You can do this with calming music and an empty room.

· Keep your emotional state regulated: when you keep your stress levels down, you won't overeat.

· Avoid overeating triggers. This is done on a case-by-case basis: what triggers overeating for you?

· Diet with a friend. Having an inbuilt support system is a surefire way to avoid overeating.

· Use a psychology methods (like meditation and affirmations) to control your emotional response to stimuli.

· Meditate daily, even if it's just for 10 or 15 minutes.

· Eat often and in smaller portions, this will keep your body in a state of fullness and keep hunger pangs at bay.

· Do something you enjoy for at least an hour a day.

· Find a quiet area and just focus on de-stressing.

· Eat lots of green food and fiber. Fiber creates a full filling, and vegetables are very calorie friendly.

· Keep a food journal. Knowing what you ate and what sort of mood you were in goes a long way towards identifying triggers to overeat.

· Join a support group, keeping up with a group to monitor your eating habits will help maintain discipline.

· Exercise in classes or groups to help keep cortisol levels down.

· Get a pet. Pets are known to keep cortisol levels low, and reduce stress in their owners.

· Do something artistic.

· Get outside and out of the house.

· Keep a diary and look at your emotional state on a day by day basis. Use this with your food journal to help identify overeating triggers.

These tips may seem simple and straightforward, but doing just a few of them will help immensely in your battle against overeating. Your primary goals are keeping cortisol and stress levels down: they trigger an overeating response in every person. With your overeating under control, you'll be much more likely to stick to your diet, and finish your New Year's resolution.
