How Do Our Children Learn Healthy Eating Habits?

Every corner of the road you turn on. Every airport you fly out of. Practically every Wal-Mart you shop in, all have a McDonalds or some other brand of fast food restaurant in them. We have become a society of convenience, hurry-up and "I want it NOW!" With so many fast food restaurant chains in the world, how do our children learn healthy eating habits?

It's easy to grab a so-called lunch or dinner from a drive-through for convenience sake, then hit the road an not even give a care or thought as to what you really just ate. I do know this - I can't think of one person who is eating healthy buying meals while sitting in a car!

Fast food restaurants aren't helping our cause either. They know their food isn't very healthy, yet their advertising tries to suggest it is. Their salads are loaded with salt and sugars. The breads are sweetened. The meats are fried. Some places have added sugar in their french fries! What's healthy about that? And what's worse, you don't even know what's in most of the fast foods.

The occasional fast food meal (once a month, or so) should not be a problem for anyone. Especially if you are already practicing healthy eating habits and doing some form of physical activity for an hour each day. It's the weekly or more frequent trips that will wreak havoc on your body. Be prepared to work twice as hard at the gym if you find yourself frequently standing in front of someone asking you "Would you like to GO LARGE for 50 cents more?"

So back to my original question: How do our children learn healthy eating habits with so many fast food chains in the world? The answer: Children learn from their parents and by example.

Children should learn healthy eating habits when they are young. Parents must emphasize the importance and values of healthy eating habits starting at home. Children who eat healthy will pay attention longer in school and achieve better grades. They are also less likely to be overweight adults as they carry forward those values.

For those adults who struggle with being over-weight, it is never to late to learn healthy eating habits to lose weight. The good news is there is a ton of weight loss help available in bookstores and on the internet. Start eating healthy today and set an example for your children! They are our future!
