Toss the All or Nothing Attitude and Lose Weight

Many people have a hard time losing weight because they go into the process with an all or nothing attitude. They try to follow a diet of deprivation with strict rules that would make most people, no matter how strong, feel the urge to rebel. It's time to toss the all or nothing attitude and lose weight.

Here is an example of all or nothing thinking and how that kind of thinking sets you up for failure.

Nancy recently started making healthier choices. She had lost 3 pounds and had started her day with a healthy breakfast and a walk. Mid-morning she found herself in the office break-room eating a snack size bag of cookies. She crumbled up the empty bag in front of her and began to think, "Well, I have blown it now. I might as well buy and eat a candy bar and a soda. I never stick to a diet. I am a failure.", Nancy sits there feeling guilty and decides to go ahead and have that candy bar and soda and try to re-start her healthier eating plan on Monday.

If Nancy had a different mind-set, like in the example below, this situation could have ended on an entirely different note.

She crumbled up the empty bag in front of her and began to think, "I need to start bringing healthy snacks from home, so if I want to snack more often between meals I will have healthy foods to choose from.", Nancy sits there feeling proud of herself for learning from this experience and decides to immediately continue on with her healthy eating plan.
