Four Nutritional Obstacles to Emotional and Physical Health

Most of us want to eat well and lead a healthy lifestyle. However, we are stuck in unhealthy routines when it comes to foods that perpetuate bad habits, both on a physical and mental level. There are times when we make poor choices related to food, whether unconsciously or consciously, which prevent us from truly eating in a nutritional and healthy way.

Here are four common nutritional obstacles:

1. Stress

Stress, whether real or imagined, can have a direct impact on our nutritional choices. Even when we eat healthy food, if we are feeling stressed, our body experiences reduced blood flow and oxygen to the body, and unhealthy food has an even more negative effect on our body.

In addition, our cholesterol levels rise, our blood platelets become less effective, our bodies retain more salt and increase the stress hormone coristol, making us feel agitated and unhappy.

The natural balance in our body is thrown off by stress as well, with the natural bacteria in our stomach getting less effective, our natural levels of growth hormone and thyroid hormone levels decreasing and overall inflammation in the body increasing.

These effects will lower our immune system and cause us to become less healthy overall. We will feel listless, stressed, bloated and unhealthy.

2. Emotional Numbness

This world can be emotionally difficult and painful, and many of us choose to eat food in order to fill an emotional void, essentially numbing ourselves to the pain.

While the food may act as a temporarily comfort, once you finish eating, the comfort is gone and the calories, chemicals and other destructive properties of the unhealthy food is already in our body.

After all, few of us reach for carrot sticks when we feel sad, it is usually a type of dessert or other junk food that we think will help us feel better or experience fewer emotions.

3. Increasing Emotions

Many people experience the opposite problem, in that they only really feel alive when they are eating. After all, the food tastes good, it causes an immediate physical reaction in our body that can feel nice, and if we mentally associate food with comfort, food can take on the role of an emotional spark.

If you feel numb most of the time but eating makes you feel good, that is the direction you will keep turning to, no matter how bad it is for your body or your health, just to try to feel good again, even if it is just for a few minutes.

4. Fear

There is an old saying that the definition of insanity is doing the same action over and over, all while hoping to achieve a different result. Many people actually continue to make poor emotional choices because they are afraid that they will not be able to do anything else.

For example, some people are afraid that making healthy food choices will be too hard, that it will not work and they will not lose weight, or that other healthy choices such as exercising will be too hard or they will look too silly.

The fear of change immobilizes them from making the necessary changes that will positively affect their life, their weight and their health.

Start Anew

The fact is that food is just food. It cannot comfort you, it cannot heal you, and it cannot help you get to a better place in your life. That is, unhealthy food cannot do any of those things.

Making healthy food choices can actually do all of those things. Proper nutrition can make you feel better and have more energy, improved health, better sleep, and achieve weight loss.

Decide today that you are going to take your health in a new direction by making healthy food choices that will speed up your metabolism and re-establish your natural bodily biochemistry for better health and weight.

Start making changes to your exercise routine and work on the emotional issues that cause you to turn to food in the first place. Getting to a healthier place in your life is something that you will never regret.
