Motivation to Lose Weight

To start, I just want to let you know that you are not alone. Hundreds of thousands of people at this very moment are in the exact same position as you. Believe it or not, you are actually ahead of the game. Not only have you made a decision that you want to lose weight, but you have taken action! By reading this article you have taken action. You are making your weight loss goal a reality and I congratulate you on that. What I am here today to talk to you about is how we can get you motivated enough to continue the momentum you have in order make your weight loss goals come true. If you are motivated and goal-driven, I assure you, you will succeed. So, the big question is, "How on Earth Can I Get Motivated?" I am going to give you nine strategies that I have used and found to be extremely helpful to get me motivated.

The first strategy that I feel is very important is long term thinking. If you can get yourself to think about the consequences of your actions, you will be much more likely to choose the better, healthier course of action. So here is how I force myself to think in the long-term: For example, let's pretend that I am standing in front of a platter of brownies (one of my favorite snacks) and I am tempted to eat them, but I know I am trying to lose weight. I would first ask myself, "If I ate this brownie, what would happen/ how would I feel?" And then I would play it out in my head. I would think of the negative emotions I would feel if I ate it and I would think of failing to reach my weight loss goal. Then on the flip side, I would think of what would happen if I chose not to eat the brownies, I would think of how I would feel stronger and more in control. The great part about this tactic is that it can be used with anything, as specific as choosing a brownie or not to as broad as deciding whether to lose weight. So, what I invite you to do is think about it, ask yourself what will happen if I to keep living the life I am? Then write it down on a piece of paper. Then ask yourself the opposite, what will happen if I lose weight? Then write them down on a piece of paper.

Find yourself a personal trainer, or someone who is going to push you to achieve your weight loss goals no matter how difficult it may be. It is important to see this person on a regular basis for they will make sure you don't slack off and you stick to your plan. There are many reasons why this method is so successful, but one major one is our ego. We all have an ego whether we like to think so or not and we all hate to let other people see us fail. We absolutely hate the idea of others thinking less of us. So by finding a personal trainer we can use our ego and desire to have people think positively about us to our benefit. We can let our egos drive us to want to prove to our trainer what we are made of and prove that we are actually tougher than we may look. Having someone to help you out and push you through your difficulties is almost a guarantee for losing weight.

My third strategy for getting motivated plays on your competitive spirit. This one applies to anyone who is competitive, for it will use your competitive spirit to drive you. What you are going to want to do is make a bet with some friends or family. Tell them your weight-loss goal and let them bet against you. What this will do is drive you to "show them" that you can achieve goals and you will beat them at the bet. By now you might start seeing a pattern. It is important to use your attributes, whether positive or negative, in your benefit. In a way, it is like martial arts, you are redirecting certain things and making them work for you rather than against you.

Never play the blame game, it will just screw you up. Plain and simple, don't blame anyone but yourself. I don't care whether it is genetics or being big-boned or aliens came down from mars and pumped fat into your body! They are all simply excuses that take you farther away from your objective. Yes, some people do have a genetic make up that may make them more prone to gaining weight, but so what. You still are in control of whether you gain weight or lose weight which means you are responsible.

Another great way to get yourself motivated is to set up a reward system. It shouldn't be a food reward system, but rather an activity type one. For example, say your goal is to lose ten pounds in the next 3 weeks, if you succeed, reward yourself by going shopping, going to a movie, taking a day off of work, hanging out with friends, or going mountain climbing. Whatever it is, it is always important to create rewards at checkpoints along the way. This will help you if you are a short-term thinker to concentrate on the reward you will get if you meet your goal.

My sixth tactic to get motivated is to join a forum. Forums are a great place to find and talk to people who are going through the same situation as you. Also, many weight loss forums have a successes section where people will share their success stories which can be extremely inspiring and can help keep your spirits height to know that if they did it, I can do it too. Forums are also a great resource for finding out what works and what doesn't along with priceless advice from experienced members.

A very important thing to do while in the process of losing weight is to surround yourself with skinny people. Think about it, if everyone who you hang out with is ordering super unhealthy foods, are you going to be the only one to order something healthy? Most likely not. On the other hand, if everyone is ordering really healthy good foods, are you going to also order healthy good food? Probably. Also, skinner people tend to have a more active lifestyle and will push you to do more active stuff which will only work in your benefit when trying to lose weight. Peer pressure is a very powerful thing, and if you can surround yourself with positive peer pressure, your chances of success will increase dramatically.

My last and final strategy to help you get motivated is to envision your end goal. Envision exactly how you will look, and how you will feel when you reach your ideal weight. Constantly remind your self of where you are headed if you just stick on the healthy plan. If you can always keep the end goal in sight you will have a much better chance of reaching it.
