Your brain controls all the muscles in your body, so can you train it to push you beyond your physical limits to succeed? The experts say you can, what do you think?

Have you ever been working out and felt like if you did one more rep you'd tear a muscle or pass out? For most of us I am sure the answer is yes, but it's not your body that's holding you back - it can almost always do more if pushed. It's your mind. Your brain is programmed to tell your body to survive. It's all very primitive.

You may work in an office, but in evolutionary terms, your body is still out with a spear hunting woolly mammoths for your next meal. The brain is programmed to conserve energy and self-protect so it tells the body, "You can't do that". When you feel you can't lift anymore, it's because you're low on glycogen, the main fuel source for your muscles. But it's not the only source - body fat is also available. Right, the problem is that your muscles are telling you to stop, so you do. To get passed this you have to get your brain to talk to your body. Researchers at the University of Cape Town have found that receptors in the brain called interleukin-6 are responsible for the moment when your body says enough. It's and safety measure. The brain tells the body to shut down and protect it from injury.

Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP), is a system of techniques designed to harness the power of the mind through communication, Most athletics would agree that winning is more than simply being athletically the best; it's also about winning the mind game. Cast your mind back, Roger Bannister ran a mile in under four minutes, most runners thought this to be an impossible task. But since he broke the record, many other runners have also accomplished it. So what's changed? The major thing was belief that it was possible. Remember beliefs can limit or they can empower people.

Ok, then there are limits. 'A 20 stone couch potato could not run a marathon on mind power alone,' but by pushing his limits incrementally, he can accomplish this over time. These incremental changes are key to mind over muscle. It's all about identifying your negative thoughts, then replacing them with different, but realistic ones. So if you tell yourself you will never bench-press 80kg you'll never do it. Prepare to fail. But if you tell yourself you can do it, but you don't have the strength, physical training to achieve that, you'll fail to injure yourself. But if you keep telling yourself you can lift 2kg more than you did in your last session, you'll be setting a series of tiny, achievable goals. Before you know it, you're there.

Mr Motivator

You can train your mind to make your body feel better about exercise. De-motivation occurs when exercise becomes a chore. The key is to teach your brain that you hit the gym because you want to, and not because you have to. Repeat the mantra "I love doing this" after your workout and you'll feel great. Soon it will become ingrained in you're your mind, and simply repeating the words when your not in the mood for the gym will psych you up. Similarly, changing your perception of pain and fatigue can help you with stamina and endurance. Lactic acid cramps your muscle when you workout but you can work though this: focus on what it means - that the muscle is tearing so that it can become stronger and bigger. Anyway they say it's not winning it's the taking part that count's, but ironically by enjoying the process you're more likely to achieve the goal's you have set.
