The Power of Your Beliefs on Your Weight Loss - Believe You Can Slim

Which comes first.......

We've all heard the 'chicken and egg' question; well today I'd like you to ponder a similar question...

Which comes first - the result or the belief about the result?

Let me explain... Do you believe you cannot lose weight, or stick to an eating plan and then by and by that's the result you get? Or do you see the result and then believe you cannot do it? My experience from the clients I work with is either can be the case.

Let me explain... we read much these days about positive thinking, and even going back to Henry Ford whose quote, 'Whether you think you can or you think you cannot, you're probably right' is one of my personal favourites... the overwhelming message is that our consistent and persistent thoughts become our reality. Given that most people's thoughts focus on what they don't want rather than what they do want it's no wonder we have a constant challenge to make changes.

When we think, 'I'm so fat', 'I can't resist that chocolate bar', or 'I'm too exhausted to exercise', our unconscious mind sets out to prove us right. As humans often when something isn't working we do the same thing over and over, yet expect different results. In the brilliant book 'Who Moved my Cheese' by Spencer Johnson, he talks about how rats are programmed differently - and if something isn't working they find a different approach.

What would happen if you took a different approach and changed those thoughts to be more helpful? So:
I'm so fat, becomes... I'm learning to be slimI can't resist that chocolate bar, becomes...I could have that chocolate bar but I choose not to right now, I'd love a crisp juicy apple insteadI'm too exhausted to exercise, becomes.... I'm going to move my body more today and feel great doing it.

Here's how:

Think of a new belief you would like to embody:
Imagine 'another you' in front of you who already holds that belief. So maybe you believe you are motivated, confident, full of energy, unstoppable.
Now imagine what that 'other you' is able to achieve with that belief. Motivated to move your body more each day. Confident that you can follow the best eating plan for you.
Imagine how that other you behaves as they demonstrate the new belief effortlessly. How does the other you talk to themselves? How do they move? What voice tone do they use?
Be guided by your intuition and tweak the image to one that makes you feel positive, upbeat and better about yourself.
When you have a strong powerful image, take a step forward and literally imagine stepping into the other you. Look through those eyes, hear through those ears and feel the feelings of the new you with that empowering belief.
Now think of a time in the future when you would like to behave as the new you. Really imagine in detail what it would be like to see things from that new perspective. How are things going to be so much better now? In what other ways will things be better, viewed from this new perspective?
Over the next few weeks 'act as if' this new you and new belief is absolutely true. If it feels like you are making it up to begin with, then it's working perfectly, keep going. The more you do this the more your brain will take on the new belief and the easier it will become.

This is the process that many Olympic athletes use. They run their race over and over again in their mind to win gold. Did you know that the brain cannot tell the difference between a real and a vividly imagined experience? This is why the more you imagine being that way, the easier it is to take on the new behaviour.
